Maple News

It’s May. So as far as maple news goes, it’s mostly about slathering that fresh harvest on something and eating it! Start strong and sweet with Cornflake Crusted French Toast, Apple Pie French Toast, Campfire French Toast, Finnish Pancakes, or Bacon Sweetcorn Cakes. Then dine on Grilled Chicken Thighs with Rhubarb Sauce, Maple Glazed Pork Loin, or Barbecued Steak with Chimichurri and Sweet Potato. And for dessert, prudence du jour: No-Guilt Vegan Chocolate Chia Seed Pudding, No-Fry Vegan Donuts, or Maple Matcha.

In industry news, the USDA will soon be conducting the 2021 maple syrup survey; all the gory details on this year’s season will follow. You can now purchase medical-mushroom-infused maple syrup. And, New Brunswick maple is on the rise. As is press coverage of present-day indigenous maple production! Check out these great stories about Ojibwe and Anishanaabek maple and the Blue Water Indigenous Alliance. You will learn something!

Backyard News

People are returning to their backyards after the winter hiatus and finding the darndest things. From old tombstones to jumping worms. From a flock of lambs to fossils from the ice age.  It’s almost like we haven’t been paying any attention at all!

Of course, that’s not true. We’re just busy protecting the bees, protecting the barn swallows, and regreening the planet. That’s all!

Now back to the backyard!
